Vermase History

Hailing from the book of Jeremiah, the term , Vermase  means, ‘’green despite the drought’’. It was a literary club formed in 1982 made up of young Christians that met every Sunday at the Church of God in Port-au-Prince, Haiti to discuss many topics of life.  

As time went on, a majority of us started travelling to different parts of the world. From time to time we still found time to visit each other and discussed life.  In 2004, we came together to visit Haiti on a special mission. We formed 5 groups of 5 and started visiting different places in the country. Being the leader of my group, I chose the small town of Mariani, Léogâne, where widows and widowers of the Church of God resided. 

That day we visited a small house that housed 32 people; this was a major turning point for me. I saw a senior citizen eat just a hard plantain as meal. It weighed on my heart to see the conditions in which my fellow Haitians were living in. 

Returning back to the USA, I decided to meet with many of my colleagues to explain the state our seniors where living day by day. From that day, in October 2005, we decided to create the Vermase foundation which is now a non- profit organization under 501 (C3), headquartered at 601 Beverly Blvd, Upper Darby PA 19082.
